Typing "x" results in GPSS looking for any map file that includes your current coordinates and has covers less area than the current map.
In the United States (and using maps downloadable from GPSS), at the smallest scale you'll see a map at the scale 1in. = 100 yds.
You can add aerial photographs of places of interest, something you'll see in the self-running demo that's shipped with GPSS.
